MGT Nov 8 meeting summary, Next meetings for Nov 14, Dec 6

Nov 8 MGT meeting summary. We made a jump from last spring when we were talking about details of plans and how to get the information to talking about big picture options. Mat-Su Borough is currently planning for landfill expansion into the Crevasse-Moraine Trails. Their first public meeting was Oct 25 and had about 35 people attend, and next CMT meeting is Nov 14. To get some idea of responses, at our (MGT) meeting (Nov 8), their consultant (USKH's Sara Wilson Doyle) provided some preliminary views of the alternatives to be presented at their 2nd public meeting on Nov 14: nature trail system, fitness central, gateway to Matanuska Greenbelt, and legacy "Central Park". Most people at our meeting felt these could all be accommodated in the big system.

Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area (MLSRA) hopes to do some planning if / when money is available. They anticipate having a bike trail from the Glenn Hwy enter the park and lead to Mat Lake. The new MSCVB visitor center is supposed to be built on the old Homestead RV site, across the highway from MLSRA.

An idea was also proposed for more collaboration between Matanuska Experiment Farm and Alaska Dept of Fish and Game, a little like Creamer's Field in Fairbanks, but not all of it. This would include all the trails, but add more educational components to this unique area of cultural and natural history. This is a modified version of some things similar to early drafts of farm's proposed master plan.

The area can accommodate all of the above, if desired.

Confused? Come to the meetings first hand to get the straight skinny. Put your own thoughts on the table.
Seriously, there are so many overlapping processes right now, that they look like the spaghetti loops of our trails.

There were actually some other meetings where connectivity to Matanuska Greenbelt came up, but I'm trying to not get you too confused. I'll try to get some materials online or point you to them with links as information becomes available.

Nov 14, MSB public meeting #2 planning for Crevasse-Moraine, 6:30pm, MSB Animal Shelter Classroom between Landfill and Recycling Center (same place as first meeting). Four alternatives will be discussed in a station format where groups move among the stations every 15 min. Alternatives include nature trail system, fitness central, gateway to Matanuska Greenbelt, and legacy "Central Park". Let the MSB know what you think about the various alternatives.

Dec 6, Thurs night, 5:30pm, next Mat Greenbelt meeting. Matanuska Experiment Farm, Kerttula Hall, probably the lab to the left as you go in the front door. We'll pick up where we left off at the last meeting including discussion about the other plans being discussed, possibly with updated versions.
