MSB announced that the Crevasse-Moraine trailhead parking area would be closed starting Monday May 6, 2013, for construction of the new trailhead. However, the contractor started moving equipment in today, so it might be hard to get to the trailhead (I haven't actually been there).
Regardless, MSB plans on closing the CMT trails on Monday for breakup / mud conditions. Bearberry Bluff in Greenbelt Central has been closed for awhile because of mud.
I went in from the south end (Matanuska Lake trailhead, most of Long Lake Loop) today to check out those conditions since the trails south of Long Lake and the Matanuska Field tend to be the earliest to dry out. Let's just say, they don't think it's summer yet either. There's still ice in many areas, so that has to melt then the soils thaw and dry. It's ok for some individual foot traffic, but I wouldn't plan on any groups yet. State Parks does have the gate open, and the parking area is dry. The lakes are still frozen on surface, but did not test them.
Where to go: Many of the farm roads tend to be more gravelly and dry out before other places. Paved bike paths - Trunk Rd, Palmer-Wasilla Hwy, Palmer to Butte beside Old Glenn.
West Butte - still a bunch of snow in various places, but most of the steps are mostly ice free now. (I did still use my microspikes on Thursday.).
I think they may still be skiing in Hatcher Pass. (hey, just looking on the upside)
Don't forget to check MSB's website for trail conditions and when the trails are reopened.
